It would be foolish to think that a company could thrive without the values of teamwork. In fact, it is the fundamental of any thriving company to both encourage and reward teamwork because only through such collaborations can we get big results on big tasks. As a leader, boss, manager, whatever hat you wear, you might have wondered how you could really encourage both solidarity and a sense of community – two very important tenants of team work – in your environment. Lucky for you, we made a list.

1. Company sports team
Not as uncommon as you might think. Nothing builds solidarity and teamwork in the work environment like actually creating some real need for it in a recreational sport. Plus, it’s a great way for employees to escape the stress of everyday needs – car troubles, looking for debt settlement programs, PTA meetings, etc.

2. Company retreat
Everyone knows that there are two sides to every employee: the side you see in work (the professional) and the side you see outside (the person). Getting to know both and giving employees the chance to see it too will strengthen their sense of community even more. Take your team out on a trip or go out to dinner. Cookouts work, too.

3. Physical challenges
Weight loss competitions, relay races, company carnivals – anything that is a physical challenge and requires teamwork will help reinforce the sense of solidarity in the work force.

And remember that no employee can handle a major job on his own. The big jobs rely on big groups of people all working together as one to achieve big results.

Creating an effective team at work involves setting goals and letting everyone know what you expect out of them. You must have good communication from everyone that works with you. Have an open door policy, where people can state their opinions in a respectful way. Everyone on your team should feel like they are valued. There should also be an understanding that if you work hard to reach the united goal of the whole team, then it can help everyone to advance. If team members do good work, then they should get rewarded and recognized for that.

You should make sure that the team you are creating has competent people on it that can get the job done. You want to be able to trust your team and make sure that your team trusts each other. Teach positive thinking. You want to work towards accomplishing good things instead of worrying about the negative. A good team should be motivated to do the best that they can. They should work together and help each other out. Everyone on the team should know that they are important and that they matter. Follow these steps and you should have a winning work team.

Effective team management directly affects the quality and quantity of work being completed. Team members working in a safe, respectable and organized environment are more likely to complete a project on time with the minimal amount of mistakes. While it is important to maintain a friendly environment, always maintain a professional relationship.

Change the team member when changing projects. This gives each team members the opportunity to learn new skills as well as share their skills with each. By doing this the team members will sharpen each other-s skills. Because each team member is expected to contribute, diversifying the teams allows each team member to play a new role on each project.

Set clear expectations for the team members. Communicate your ideas and listen to the team-s suggestions for improvement. Be willing to readjust but not stray away from the team-s list of expectations. Make sure each team member has a clear understanding of their role on the team. Stretch the team members by placing them in roles that will cause them to strengthen their weaknesses. For example when a person is afraid of public speaking, assign that person to be the team-s spokesperson to help them overcome that fear.

An effective team is a productive team and it can sometimes be a challenge to manage your team so it becomes effective and productive. Once you do create such a team, your work is not done, you as a manager have to maintain the culture of the team so it keeps being effective and productive.

The most important aspect of an effective team is for the team to have the togetherness factor. Many a times, employees are focused on individual goals. Is this new to you? Catch up here What instead they need to cultivate is a team goal. Role of an effective manager is critical in building a culture of team goals. Managers need to reinforce the importance of team goals and role of an individual in achieving these team goals.

An effective manager would reinforce the importance of team goals by rewarding the right behavior. If an employee acts in the favor of team goal versus individual accomplishment, they should be publicly rewarded. On the other hand, if an individual displays actions to advance their personal goals, an effective manager should point that out to the employee but do so in a private fashion. Remember the golden rule, always praise in public and criticize in private.
